This discussion tackles the difficult questions raised by the outcome of last year’s referendum, exploring the role of the arts in European democracies.

Should artists have unrestricted freedom of movement? How European should artists be? Do borders matter?

96% of arts professionals in the UK voted to remain in the European Union. In the months leading up to the anniversary of the referendum, a series of three public debates will explore the issues that most directly affect the future of the arts in the UK and Europe.

This, the first in the series, looks at the idea of freedom of movement: should it be available to artists? Should everyone have the right to live and work anywhere? Is cosmopolitanism inherent to working in the arts? How should people in the creative and cultural sectors engage with different national and regional identities and traditions?
